I found these marvelous old photos of Ape, Latvia on the internet.
I’m sorry that I’m unable to give proper credit to the photographers who took them.
Located in north-east Latvia, on the banks of the River Vaidava, and near the border with Estonia, the first written record of the town was in 1449. The town originated on the estate of G. G. Hope; the land was granted to him in 1420 by the Great Master of the Livonian Order and the town was originally known as Hoppenhof. In 1925 the name was changed to Ape.
